But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. James 1: 22-25
There are a lot of emphases on the subject of not just hearing or receiving the word but in the doing of the word and there is a reason for this. While Jesus walked the streets of the earth, he gave a lot of caution on the need to ‘heed his sayings’. In fact in one place he said keeping (or doing) his word is proof that you love him.
Christianity is not all about the piousness and sanctimonious looks and talks nor is it about the rites and rituals. Christianity is a life; it is a nature, it is a call to not only perform godly deeds but to manifest the life and nature of almighty God which he has given us to our world. God has not called us to follow after a religion; rather he has called us to be his outstretched arm to the world.
Having come into Christ, we have been brought into a life. This life makes us different and God expects us to live and act differently. The word of God as contained in the Bible gives us a pattern, a manner of life and a disposition as God’s children. In Paul’s letter to Timothy, he admonished him to be an example of the believer in words, action, manner of life etc.
The Apostle James tells us that whoever does not DO the word is deceiving himself. In other words it is akin to shooting yourself in the foot if you say you believe and agree with all that God has said in the word yet you do not DO it. It is not enough to agree or to believe; in fact Jesus said even the demons believe and tremble.
The proof that we are followers of Christ is in what we do as a result of the word. The word of God guarantees our prosperity, success, promotion and eternal security however it is not if we agree or believe but if we do the word.
The example given in our theme text tells of something really sad; a man who looks at himself in the mirror and forgets what he is like. If you have seen the picture God describes of you in the word, he expects you to hold onto it and in doing so, make it work in your life.
For instance, Jesus said; If you have faith, you will speak to the mountain and it will move. Now, if you are faced with a mountain (a problem, an unfavorable situation), doing the word mean ‘Speaking to that mountain’. That is what will guarantee results according to the word of God. Some folks would rather pray asking God to move the mountain for them.
Jesus asked a question while he was still on earth; He asked, ‘when the son of man returns, will he still find faith on the earth?’ In other words, will he still find men and women who do the word? Will he still find men and women who have let the word of God become the final authority in their lives? He actually lamented because he knew that at that time, men and women would rather love to set their trust on what their eyes see.
We have been called to not only agree and believe the word of God but to do it; to follow the instructions and commands of Christ. Making progress in life depends solely on doing the word.
