Introduction

Several people down the years have tried to understand and explain what life is; the origin of life, how the things we see in our world evolve; are sustained and the fact that thousands of years down the line, these patterns have remained consistent.

There are different explanations, theories, and teachings that have tried without success to explain “Life”. Science put forth the theory of evolution, the different religions talk about some deity believed to be in control of life and man. Atheists and other groups have their own beliefs but ultimately, the only true, consistent, and viable explanation to all that life is and all it presents is the Bible.

The Bible; the truth!

The Bible tells us of how life began; ‘God’ existed right at the beginning. Genesis 1:1 tells us; “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth”. It is not in our place to ask whom this God is or how he came about because the answers are not available anywhere at the moment. As we study further down that Chapter, we see how the various elements were formed- light, land, the sun, stars, trees, vegetation, and finally how God made man. The Bible would tell us later in Hebrews 11:2 that ‘By faith we believe that the worlds were framed by the word of God’.

The account of the creation of man not only explains how the human race kicked off but also throws light on the character of God. The Story began with telling us that the earth was without form, it was void, and darkness covered the surface of the deep; God started by fixing things. He created light, he began to separate one thing from the other and at the end of each process, he recounted that it was good.

God made man:

God created the first man Adam from the dust. The Bible actually recounts that God formed man and breathed into him the ‘breathe of life’ and thus man became a living soul. God created man in His (God) image and his purpose is for man to be like him and to function like him. When God made man, he clearly defined his purpose; “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth”. Genesis 1:26. Hence, man was created with a definite ‘job description’.

Having given man his job description, God then made the woman. This woman would be a helpmate for the man in accomplishing the task God has given him already. They both began to live in the home God made for them; The Garden of Eden. “And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed”. Genesis 2:8

With the above premises, life began for man- Adam and his wife Eve. They had a lovely garden to tend, the company of each other and the fellowship of God every evening. In addition, God gave them an instruction. They were free to eat anything they wanted to eat in the Garden except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. On the day they will eat of it, God said they would die.

The Enemy:

There was another figure not introduced to us until the third chapter of Genesis. This personality is Satan; the devil, once an angel but led a rebellion and was cast down to the earth. This enemy eventually deceives the man and his wife and convinces them to eat the fruit God had asked them not to eat.

True to the warning of God, Adam and his wife died! The death however was not physical but spiritual. The lost the garden, lost that rich fellowship with God because that sin of disobedience caused a separation between God and man.

Consequences of the Offence:

The Bible would give the implications of this act of disobedience later on in the book of Romans 5:12’ ’Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned’. The bible reveals that Adam’s sin brought death into the world. Death was not God’s plan for man but came into the world consequent upon the transgression of man and this death was passed upon all men. From then, things, plants, animals and of course man could all now die.

Genesis Chapters one to three have shown the origins of life, creation, man, sin, and death. In addition, it introduces the principal deities God and the devil, good and evil, right and wrong. In a latter module, we will see how these two being continue the tussle for the soul of man.

Conclusion:

From the above we can deduce the following;

i.                    There is a God who is the creator, origin, and course of life.

ii.                 There is another deity, an enemy of God who makes people do wrong just as he did the first man and woman.

iii.               God created Man as well as the plants, animals and the universe and not by some other interpretation given to us in the world today.

iv.               God designed life and just as he had a purpose for the first family, he has a purpose for everyone on earth today.

v.                   If God made man and created life; he made you, created your life and has a definite task for which he kept you in the earth.
