Today we will continue on our study on the parable of the sower. The Bible tells us that the next set of seeds fell on rocky areas or among stones. Matthew 13:5 “Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away”.
Whenever I read through these verses, I always am intrigued by what happened with the various seeds in their unique ”landing” points. The Bible tells us that some seeds fell in rocky areas. It is expedient that we realize that this sower’s intention in sowing was for these seeds to fall on good soil that will be productive. God’s intention is not for his words to fall on anywhere short of the good soil of our hearts.
With these that fell on rocky ground, Jesus also gave us the interpretation of what the rocky ground mean. Matthew 13:20-21But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it; Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
Rocky or stony areas mean the seeds cannot penetrate into the earth. The Bible said this individual actually received the word, he received the blessing, he received God’s counsel for him with joy. He begins to celebrate; “Ýes, God said I am healed, He said there’s life now for my dying business” etc. However his excitement and celebration is short-lived because there is no root within him. He thus cannot sustain the words he has received especially with the impending tribulations and persecution that will arise because of the word.
The bible tells us in 2nd Timothy 3:12 “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution”. It comes in the package and make no mistakes about it, the reason for it is the word that you have received. Are you going to buckle at the sight of an attack on the word or are you going to stand your ground and say; “In all these things, we are more than conquerors”?
God’s role is to send you His word but whatever happens with that word is entirely up to you. God’s word is clear about your finances, your health, your relationships and your day to day living but whether that word will bear any fruit is dependent on how you respond to it. May God’s word to you never be like seeds on the pathway or on the rocky ground in Jesus Name, Amen.
