The parable of the sower is one parable that appears in all the gospels with the exception of John. It is pretty familiar to most of us and if you study the significance, you will realize that it is not surprising Jesus said it is one of the most important Bible lessons.
According to the parable, Jesus said the sower’s seeds fell on four different kinds of grounds- Wayside, among thorns, in rocky places and on good soil. For the rest of this week, we will examine each of these soil types with a view to understand what Jesus said and how to relate with these in our lives. First of all, Jesus said the seed sown represents the word of God.
Matthew 13:4 And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:
This is probably the most discouraging of the seeds sown by this sower. The idea of every seeds’ spreading is for it to make contact with the earth, get inside the earth and begin to grow. This one didn’t even make it because the bible says no sooner had the seeds hit the ground than fowls/birds came and devoured them.
Jesus would in the verses that followed tell the meaning of this; Mat 13:19 When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
Jesus said when a person hears the word and he doesn’t understand it, the devil comes immediately for that word. Imagine this; one hears a word from God concerning his healing or a miracle in his family and because he did not understand the word, the word doesn’t work for him when it came.
The bible tells us that God’s word is God’s answer to any and every human problem. In Psalm 107:20, the bible says; He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions. God’s answer is his word. How many times have we missed out on our time of visitation because we did not understand the word God sent our way?
Today, you must make a decision to open your heart to receive and learn the word of God as it comes to you. How can I receive the word and ensure it doesn’t fall on the pathways of my heart? That will be our lesson for tomorrow.
God bless you.
